Synopsis

Three women meet in a West African country. As well as offering heavenly beaches, gorgeous sea and comfortable accommodation, the purpose-built resort there for European tourists provides the perfect opportunity for encounters with strong, dark, sweetly smiling young men who are well-disposed to doing what is desired of them for what is actually not excessive compensation.

Set against the backdrop of a society riddled with oppression and hopelessness, FREETOWN is about insouciant pleasures, about social and sexual emancipation and about imbalances of power and the cloak of love that conceals them. The island of freedom lies in an ocean of despair and from beyond the holiday complex's double fencing the groans of the real world can be heard.

The women that we get to know are quite aware of what they have come here for. They are worldly and confident consumers for whom happiness and pleasure are rights; you should exploit your strong position on this market for affection without restrictions. Why wouldn't you be allowed to enjoy a few weeks of unrestrained pleasure after a year of hard work in the barren North?

The encounters and contacts that led the women here are out of view; we are privy only to their thoughts, rationalisations and conversations. FREETOWN does not culminate in a clear outcome or positioning, but it does say something about the duality of human relationships, about the way in which we are governed and driven by our desires and about how we nonetheless manage to manipulate and channel these desires.

This play was inspired by the French film Vers le Sud (2005), directed by Laurent Cantet. Although FREETOWN's narrative and setting are different from the film's, both works see women seeking affection on far-off beaches - women who know only too well that you never get something for nothing.
